It's definately not a secret that many high school students, or teenagers in general can be complete jerks at times, however, I'm starting to believe things are getting worse. As i'm sure many of you know, one of the main methods of modern communication is myspace.com. On myspace, there is a group for my high school, which, of course, I'm a member. In this group, there is a thread entitled "We need more fights." This wouldn't be terrible at all if every single person who replied to this didn't agree with this. Of course, violence has always been a crowd pleaser in American society, but I find this disturbing. Seeing two people inflict pain to each other and eventually get in trouble doesn't seem entertaining. For the record, I'm not the type of person who's anti violence, I play Grand Theft Auto and watch correographed fights on TV all the time, however this is different. With these fights there's real pain being expressed; it's not cool moves, just cries for mercy and an extreme amount of profanities. Is it just me, or does anyone else find it disturbing that I'm the only one in this group that spoke out against high school fights?

I agree, but if two people want to fight that badly, let them go and fight, just don't get in my way over it. Make sure my tax dollars don't go toward the hospital bills either.
The question of why people fight is a pretty deep and complex one. I think it's especially prevelant among us younger folks because we like attention and we like to rebel against something and fighting is a way of doing that.
On a slightly related note, came across a piece today on why kids flock to MySpace (via Boing Boing). You might be interested in it.
The idea of people starting fights for the sake of it is pretty ridiculous to me, and I'd be very surprised if that many people actually buy into it.
As far as naturally occuring fights go though, it's one of those things that has always and will always happen. And if you've seen many high school fights, it's usually not even that big of a deal. Usually, two people end up on the ground wrestling until their friends break them up.
Boys will be boys. In the words of the great Phil Lynott, "if the boys wanna fight, you better let 'em"
@Jason Latimer:
You know whats funny about that. Way back when (about 2 years ago :) We actually only had about two male fights that year, on the other hand we had about 20-30 female fights.
Although "boys will be boys" and fights will always occur, I find it very sick that so many students find other people's pain to be so entertaining.
its just one more thing to talk about to get you through the day. just how news people like to report more about violence then good deeds.
and i am gonna go with Skal in that when i was in highschool, there were way more girl fights then guy fights.
I don't think there's anything terribly creepy about it. I think the idea of physical violence tends to appeal to a lot of men, especially younger ones, until they're really experienced it. I'm sure such things happened plenty in the days before TV and movies and such...but with violence as romanticized as it is these days, it's hard not to be drawn into the appeal of potentially triumphing over some sort of adversity through physical combat.
The proper outlet for this, IMO, is certainly not in the classroom, or in school at all, but perhaps in a more formal environment, like a martial arts class, or an amateur boxing ring (with people to make sure no one gets seriously hurt, of course).
A good round of hand-to-hand combat can be quite exhilarating, I know I used to love it when I was younger and took martial arts, but as I said, it's often nothing like the movies, and never as glorious as these young men may expect it to be.
Yes I have to agree with the Vincent Grayson on this one. It's quite a humbling experience to have some 60 year old guy beat the crap out of you when your 16.
Don't worry Drew. It's always been that way. We didn't have myspace when I was in school, but you couldn't raise a fist without hearing a resounding chorus of "Fight! Fight! Whooooo!". At that point you HAD to fight or risk the disapproval of the cheering throngs. Teenagers in general tend to go in for more savage forms of amusement. Hormones and all that. It sucks when you mature a little faster than your peers. Just hang in there.

Gee, I'm sorry for you, Skal. What did you do to the old buzzard?
Martial Arts, my master and I had a match. 60 year-old Japanese guy vs. a 16 year-old white kid.. the old guy won.
peace is the best policy -- whats also disturbing is the results of that APUSH exerise! Tons of kids (upper level AP kids too-the future of America) think like world policemen or imperlialists? mind your own damn matters people and avoid conflict whenever possible!!
